In Praise Of Games That Don't Rush You
There's a certain kind of mobile game built to interrupt you. Energy runs out, you wait, you come back later. It's designed to nag. Lately I've been drawn to the opposite: games that just let you play as long as you want.
Pocket Pantry is my current example. No energy meter, no timers pushing you off. I expected to lose interest without the artificial pull, and the exact opposite happened. I played longer because I wanted to, not because a countdown told me to.
Cozy games work best on a phone because they slot into small gaps in your day without stress. You cook a dish, decorate a corner, and put the phone down feeling relaxed instead of manipulated.
I'd rather a developer trust me to come back on my own. The games that do that tend to stay installed the longest, at least for me.
